The clutch pressure plate is a robust, spring-loaded device. Its primary function is to act as a giant clamp. When your foot is off the clutch pedal, the pressure plate exerts tremendous force—often over a thousand pounds—pressing the clutch disc firmly against the spinning flywheel. This direct metal-to-friction material contact locks the engine and transmission together, allowing engine power to be transmitted to the wheels.
